Mother's Day (2010)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Crazed members of a sadistic family return to their childhood home to terrorize the new owners.

The Quartile Take

Darren Lynn Bousman's home-invasion thriller is a competent if derivative genre exercise. The plot follows a fairly standard siege structure with a sadistic family dynamic that echoes better films in the genre, lacking originality. Acting is serviceable with Rebecca De Mornay delivering a menacing performance as the matriarch that elevates the material. Cinematography is workmanlike and functional but unremarkable, typical of mid-budget horror. Novelty is low as it retreads well-worn home-invasion territory with familiar torture-horror beats despite the remake label. The ending provides reasonable tension resolution without being particularly memorable or subversive.
