Pineapple Express (2008)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 2 ratings

A stoner and his dealer are forced to go on the run from the police after the pothead witnesses a cop commit a murder.

The Quartile Take

Pineapple Express blends stoner comedy with action in a way that felt fresh at the time, largely carried by the genuine chemistry between Seth Rogen and James Franco. Franco in particular delivers a standout comedic performance as Saul, earning above-average marks for acting. The novelty comes from the genre mashup — action movie conventions filtered through a hazy, buddy-comedy lens — which gave it a distinct identity in the Apatow comedy wave. However, the plot is fairly thin and episodic, stringing together set pieces rather than building meaningful narrative momentum. The cinematography is workmanlike at best. The climax and ending devolve into chaotic, over-the-top violence that feels tonally inconsistent and narratively unsatisfying, undercutting the more grounded character comedy that made the first act enjoyable.
