As the son of a Viking leader on the cusp of manhood, shy Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III faces a rite of passage: he must kill a dragon to prove his warrior mettle. But after downing a feared dragon, he realizes that he no longer wants to destroy it, and instead befriends the beast – which he names Toothless – much to the chagrin of his warrior father.
How to Train Your Dragon is a warmly executed animated adventure with genuine emotional resonance. Its flight sequences and sweeping aerial cinematography are genuinely exceptional — the DreamWorks animators achieved something visually stunning that holds up well. The plot follows a fairly familiar misfit-proves-himself arc, elevated by sincere character work between Hiccup and Toothless but not especially surprising in its beats. Voice performances are solid and charming without being remarkable. Novelty sits in the middle: the film has a distinctive tone blending Norse mythology with heartfelt boy-and-his-pet dynamics, but the hero's journey structure is well-worn. The ending is emotionally satisfying and earns its stakes with a permanent consequence, though it resolves a bit conventionally for the broader conflict.
