Thor (2011)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Against his father Odin's will, The Mighty Thor - a powerful but arrogant warrior god - recklessly reignites an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

The Quartile Take

Thor is a competent but formulaic MCU origin story that follows the redemption arc beat-for-beat: arrogant hero humbled, learns humility, earns power back. The Asgard visuals are colorful and ambitious but not particularly distinctive cinematography. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston elevate the material with charisma and genuine menace respectively, but the Earth-bound sequences feel thin and the romance with Jane Foster is underdeveloped. The ending resolves too neatly and the villain's plan lacks weight. As an early MCU entry it hits familiar superhero beats without much distinctiveness beyond its Norse mythology setting.
