HOUBA! is a live-action adaptation of the beloved Belgian comic strip Marsupilami, directed by Alain Chabat. The plot is a fairly standard adventure-comedy romp through a jungle setting with predictable beats — reporter stumbles upon mythical creature, chaos ensues — and offers little narrative surprise. The acting is broad and comedic in a very French slapstick tradition; Alain Chabat is likable but the performances are uneven overall. Cinematography gets credit for the lush Colombo/jungle locations and some energetic visual gags that capture a cartoonish spirit adequately. Novelty earns a modest bump simply because the Marsupilami itself is a genuinely distinctive and charming creature property rarely seen in live-action, giving the film a particular flavor even if the surrounding story is conventional. The ending wraps up tidily but without any memorable punch, typical of mid-tier family comedies. Overall a pleasant but unremarkable family film that satisfies fans of the source material more than general audiences.
