A stunt pilot comes across a prototype jetpack that gives him the ability to fly. However, evil forces of the world also want this jetpack at any cost.
The Rocketeer is a charming period superhero adventure with a retro 1930s aesthetic and genuine nostalgic appeal, but it never quite transcends its B-movie roots. The plot is straightforward and serviceable but thin — a classic MacGuffin chase with Nazi villains that delivers fun without depth. Acting is uneven; Bill Campbell is bland in the lead, though Timothy Dalton hams it up enjoyably as the villain. Cinematography captures the golden-age Hollywood look competently but rarely dazzles. Its novelty lies in its distinctive retro pulp comic tone predating the modern superhero wave, giving it a singular charm, though the story mechanics are formulaic. The ending resolves predictably and without much punch, wrapping things up too neatly to leave a lasting impression.
