In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2023)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

In a remote Irish village, a damaged Finbar is forced to fight for redemption after a lifetime of sins, but what price is he willing to pay? In the land of saints and sinners, some sins can't be buried.

The Quartile Take

In the Land of Saints and Sinners is a competent but familiar neo-noir thriller set against the moody backdrop of 1970s rural Ireland. Liam Neeson anchors the film with a grounded, weathered performance, and the supporting cast (including Kerry Condon) holds up well, but the acting rarely transcends solid professionalism. The plot — a retired hitman forced into one last conflict against IRA fugitives — treads well-worn genre territory without meaningfully subverting expectations. The Irish countryside cinematography is atmospheric and handsome though not visually distinctive. Novelty suffers most: the premise blends aging-assassin redemption arcs with rural crime thriller conventions in a way that feels assembled from familiar parts. The ending delivers satisfactory closure within genre conventions but lacks memorable punch.
