Azrael (2024)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

In a world where no one speaks, a devout female hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness.

The Quartile Take

Azrael is a mostly wordless horror-thriller with a striking visual commitment and an impressive physical performance from Samara Weaving, but the plot is thin and largely functional — it exists mainly to string together survival set-pieces rather than build meaningful narrative depth. The cinematography genuinely stands out, using the dense forest setting with atmospheric menace and confident framing. The no-dialogue conceit gives it some novelty, though the underlying premise (woman hunted for ritual sacrifice) is familiar genre territory. The ending feels abrupt and undercooked, failing to deliver the payoff that the buildup promises.
