Cocoon (1985)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

When a group of trespassing seniors swim in a pool containing alien cocoons, they find themselves energized with youthful vigor.

The Quartile Take

Cocoon is a warmly received, high-concept sci-fi fantasy that blends gentle humor with heartfelt drama about aging. The premise is charmingly original for its era — benign aliens, rejuvenating cocoons, and senior protagonists gave it genuine novelty in 1985. The ensemble cast (Don Ameche, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Wilford Brimley) is appealing and credible, though no single performance is transcendent. Cinematography is competent studio work without particular visual distinction. The ending, while emotionally intended as uplifting, feels somewhat abrupt and unearned in its cosmic resolution — the choice the seniors face lacks the dramatic weight it deserves, and the finale leans saccharine. Plot holds together reasonably but is fairly thin beyond its central conceit.
