The Quartile Take

Spawn had genuine potential as a dark, R-rated comic book adaptation with a morally complex anti-hero, but the execution was largely squandered. The plot is thin and rushed, failing to develop Al Simmons' transformation and inner conflict with any real depth. The acting ranges from serviceable (Michael Jai White brings physicality) to broadly cartoonish (John Leguizamo's Clown is over-the-top even by villain standards). The cinematography and early CGI, particularly the hellscapes, were ambitious for 1997 but have aged very poorly and often look cheap. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, failing to resolve the central dramatic tension in a meaningful way. Novelty earns a modest bump as it was genuinely one of the first attempts to bring a darker, more supernatural comic book character to the screen in a serious way, predating the modern superhero boom, giving it some historical distinctiveness even if the film itself underdelivers.
