After 300 years of slumber, three sister witches are accidentally resurrected in Salem on Halloween night, and it is up to three kids and their newfound feline friend to put an end to the witches' reign of terror once and for all.
Hocus Pocus is a beloved Halloween staple with a fun, campy premise rooted in Salem witch lore, but its plot is fairly thin and formulaic — kids vs. comedic villains with a ticking clock. Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker elevate the material considerably with committed, entertaining performances that give the film much of its charm and lasting appeal. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable for a mid-budget family comedy of the era. The novelty comes from the specific witch-sister dynamic, the Halloween setting, and the gleefully theatrical tone that sets it apart from generic family fare, even if the underlying structure is conventional. The ending is a bit anticlimactic and rushed, resolving the conflict rather simply without much earned dramatic weight.
