In the year 2022, a ruthless prison warden has created the ultimate solution for his most troublesome and violent inmates: Absolom, a secret jungle island where prisoners are abandoned and left to die. But Marine Captain John Robbins, convicted of murdering a commanding officer, is determined to escape the island in order to reveal the truth behind his murderous actions and clear his name.
No Escape is a competent mid-90s sci-fi action thriller that blends dystopian prison concepts with a jungle survival setup, loosely adapted from Richard Herley's novel The Penal Colony. The premise has genuine intrigue — a secret island penal colony split between warring factions — and draws on genre traditions from Escape from New York and Lord of the Flies. The plot holds together adequately but grows formulaic as it progresses, relying on predictable beats. Acting is functional but unremarkable; Ray Liotta carries the lead credibly but the supporting cast is uneven, with Lance Henriksen bringing some menace as the villain. Cinematography is workmanlike, making reasonable use of the Queensland jungle locations without distinguishing itself visually. The island setting and faction-warfare dynamic give it modest novelty within the genre, though it doesn't push boundaries. The ending resolves too neatly and conventionally for what was set up, underwhelming given the stakes established earlier.
