The Quartile Take

This 2000 Sylvester Stallone remake of the classic 1971 Michael Caine British crime film is widely regarded as a pale, unnecessary imitation. The plot transplants the story to Seattle but strips away the gritty nihilism and moral complexity that made the original compelling, delivering a generic revenge thriller. Stallone's performance is serviceable but lacks menace or depth, and the supporting cast (including Mickey Rourke) is underutilized. Cinematography is competent modern Hollywood but unremarkable. Novelty scores very low as it's a largely derivative, by-the-numbers remake that adds little to the original's legacy. The ending, like much of the film, feels flat and unsatisfying compared to the devastating conclusion of the original.
