After getting into a car accident while drunk on the day of her sister's wedding, Gwen Cummings is given a choice between prison or a rehab center. She chooses rehab, but is extremely resistant to taking part in any of the treatment programs they have to offer, refusing to admit that she has an alcohol addiction.
28 Days is a competent but fairly formulaic entry in the addiction/rehab drama genre. Sandra Bullock delivers a committed performance and the ensemble cast (Viggo Mortensen, Dominic West) elevates the material, earning a solid above-average acting score. The plot follows a well-worn redemption arc with few surprises — resistant addict enters rehab, resists, has setbacks, emerges changed — earning only a below-average novelty score. Cinematography is unremarkable and functional, serving the story without distinction. The ending is satisfying without being particularly memorable, offering appropriate emotional closure consistent with the genre's conventions.
