Charlie's got a 'job' to do. Having just left prison he finds one of his friends has attempted a high-risk job in Torino, Italy, right under the nose of the mafia. Charlie's friend doesn't get very far, so Charlie takes over the 'job'. Using three Mini Coopers, a couple of Jaguars, and a bus, he hopes to bring Torino to a standstill, steal a fortune in gold and escape in the chaos.

The Quartile Take

The Italian Job is a quintessential British caper film elevated by its sheer personality and iconic set pieces. The Mini Cooper chase through Turin's streets, sewers, and rooftops remains one of cinema's great action sequences, giving the film a distinctive, exuberant identity. Michael Caine's Charlie Croker is effortlessly charming and the ensemble cast delivers solid if unspectacular performances. Cinematography is competent and serviceable, capturing the Turin locations well without being visually dazzling. The plot is fairly standard heist fare but executed with wit and style. The ending — the cliffhanger on the Alpine road with the gold literally hanging in the balance — is genuinely audacious and memorable, earning its reputation as one of cinema's great unresolved finales.
