Ned Kelly (2003)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

After getting threatened by Kelly's friends and family, Constable Fitzpatrick places the blame on Ned Kelly and exaggerates what happened. With the biggest ever award available, Kelly and his gang set into the wild, to remain hidden from everyone who seeks them. Even if it means having his family arrested, the members of the Kelly Gang stay hidden and plan a way to get their names cleared.

The Quartile Take

The 2003 Ned Kelly film is a handsomely mounted but somewhat routine telling of the famous Australian outlaw's story. Heath Ledger brings genuine charisma to the title role and the supporting cast performs adequately, but the script reduces a complex historical figure to fairly standard outlaw-romance-on-the-run territory. The Australian outback cinematography is competent and atmospheric without being remarkable. The story of Ned Kelly has been told on film multiple times, and this version doesn't bring a distinctly fresh angle — it follows familiar biopic conventions. The climactic armored standoff provides a memorable visual moment but the overall narrative resolution feels somewhat flat given the tragic real-life ending.
