Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
A Chinese chef accidentally gets involved with a news reporter who filmed a drug bust that went awry and is now being chased by gangs who are trying to get the video tape.
Mr. Nice Guy is a solid but formulaic Jackie Chan vehicle that delivers exactly what fans expect: impressive stunt work, kinetic action choreography, and Chan's trademark comedic physicality. The plot is thin and generic — a MacGuffin chase involving a video tape and warring gangsters — with cardboard villains and little dramatic weight. Acting is functional at best, with Chan charming but the supporting cast largely forgettable. Cinematography is competent Hong Kong-action style with good spatial awareness in the fight sequences. The film lacks the novelty of Chan's peak Golden Harvest work, feeling like a recycled formula. The climax involving a massive construction vehicle demolishing a mansion is entertainingly over-the-top and memorable as a set piece.
