Loser (2000)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

On a university scholarship, a good natured student from the midwest gets a crash course in city life while dealing with three evil roommates. He befriends a virtually homeless college student whom he falls for, but she's dating a nasty professor.

The Quartile Take

Loser is a mildly enjoyable but thoroughly forgettable early-2000s college rom-com. The plot hits familiar beats without much surprise — fish-out-of-water meets unrequited love triangle — and the screenplay never elevates its premise. Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari are likable but not given material to stretch, and the supporting cast (particularly the cartoonish roommates) is broadly drawn. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable, typical of mid-budget studio comedies of the era. The film offers little that distinguishes it from dozens of similar collegiate romances, and the resolution feels rushed and unearned. A middling effort across the board.
