When a young rape victim takes justice into her own hands and becomes a serial killer, it's up to Dirty Harry Callahan, on suspension from the SFPD, to bring her to justice.
Sudden Impact is the fourth Dirty Harry entry and the one that gave the world 'Go ahead, make my day,' but it's largely a by-the-numbers sequel grafting a rape-revenge thriller onto the franchise formula. The plot is serviceable — the dual-protagonist structure (Harry hunting a killer who is herself a victim) adds mild moral complexity — but execution is uneven and pacing drags in the middle. Eastwood directs himself competently, delivering his iconic stoicism, but supporting performances are weak, with the villains cartoonishly drawn. Cinematography is solid genre work — moody Carmel locations, decent nighttime photography — nothing exceptional. Novelty is low; it recycles Dirty Harry beats while borrowing heavily from the rape-revenge subgenre without adding much distinctive voice. The ending leans into moral ambiguity with Harry letting the killer go, which is the film's most interesting beat and earns a slightly above-average mark.
