Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating
A man becomes increasingly jealous of his friend's newfound success.
Envy (2004) is a high-concept comedy that never fully delivers on its premise. The story of jealousy over a friend's absurd invention (Vapoorizer) has comedic potential but the plot meanders and struggles to sustain momentum. The cast — Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Rachel Weisz, Amy Poehler, and Christopher Walken — is genuinely talented and provides the film's brightest moments, but even they can't elevate the thin material. Visually it's unremarkable, a standard studio comedy with no distinctive visual identity. The concept, while quirky, doesn't feel particularly fresh or singular, relying on familiar jealousy and buddy-comedy dynamics. The ending is unsatisfying and abrupt. Overall a misfire despite its talented ensemble.
