French Connection II (1975)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

"Popeye" Doyle travels to Marseilles to find Alain Charnier, the drug smuggler that eluded him in New York.

The Quartile Take

French Connection II is a solid but unconventional sequel that takes Doyle out of his element and into Marseilles, giving Hackman room to deliver one of his most raw performances, particularly through the harrowing cold turkey withdrawal sequence. The plot is looser and more procedural than the original, lacking the iconic kinetic energy, but the acting—especially Hackman—is genuinely exceptional. Cinematography is competent but not as viscerally distinctive as the original's gritty New York aesthetic. Novelty is moderate: the fish-out-of-water angle and the extended addiction arc give it a distinctive identity compared to most sequels, but it still operates in the shadow of a landmark film. The ending delivers a satisfying payoff without quite matching the ambiguity and impact of the original's conclusion.
