The Alamo (2004)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Based on the 1836 standoff between a group of Texan and Tejano men, led by Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, and Mexican dictator Santa Anna's forces at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.

The Quartile Take

The 2004 Alamo retelling aims for historical accuracy over heroic myth-making, which is admirable but results in a dramatically inert narrative that struggles to generate tension despite a well-known outcome. The acting is competent, with Billy Bob Thornton providing a nuanced Davy Crockett, but other performances are uneven. Cinematography is solid and period-appropriate without being visually distinctive. The film covers well-trodden historical ground in a relatively straightforward manner, offering little that distinguishes it from earlier tellings. The ending, though historically inevitable, is handled with reasonable solemnity.
