American Daphne Reynolds heads to Europe in search of the father she's never met. But instead of finding a British version of her boho mother, she learns the love of her mom's life is an uptight politician. The only problem now is that her long-lost father is engaged to a fiercely territorial social climber with a daughter who makes Daphne's life miserable.
What a Girl Wants is a breezy, formulaic teen romantic comedy that hits familiar beats without much surprise. The plot recycled the fish-out-of-water/father-daughter reunion setup from older films (it's based on The Reluctant Debutante), offering little that feels fresh. Amanda Bynes carries the film with genuine charm and comedic timing, lifting the acting above average, while the London and English countryside settings give the cinematography a pleasant glossy sheen. The ending resolves predictably with reconciliation and romance, exactly as expected. Novelty suffers most — the premise, execution, and character archetypes (scheming stepmother-to-be, mean stepsister, stuffy politician father) are thoroughly well-worn, making this a competent but derivative entry in the teen comedy genre.
