Resident Evil: Death Island (2023)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak and a new T-Virus, Leon Kennedy is on the trail of a kidnapped DARPA scientist, and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish that is killing whales in the bay. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on the same location, Alcatraz Island, where a new evil has taken residence and awaits their arrival.

The Quartile Take

Resident Evil: Death Island is a competent animated entry in the long-running franchise that brings together fan-favorite characters across intersecting storylines converging on Alcatraz. The plot is serviceable but formulaic — another T-Virus outbreak with a shadowy villain, hitting familiar RE beats without much surprise. The voice acting (in both English and Japanese) is solid and faithful to the characters, giving the ensemble a decent dynamic. The animation is polished with some impressive action set pieces and decent use of the Alcatraz setting, though it doesn't push the envelope stylistically. Novelty is low — this is essentially a greatest-hits crossover event that recycles the franchise's standard outbreak template; fun for fans but derivative by design. The ending resolves things adequately but without much emotional payoff beyond franchise fan service.
