The world's most highly qualified crew of archaeologists and explorers is led by historian Milo Thatch as they board the incredible 1,000-foot submarine Ulysses and head deep into the mysteries of the sea. The underwater expedition takes an unexpected turn when the team's mission must switch from exploring Atlantis to protecting it.
Atlantis stands out in the Disney canon for its genuinely distinctive vision: a steampunk-inflected, anime-influenced action-adventure that deliberately avoided the musical formula, featuring a more mature tone and a diverse ensemble cast. Its visual conception and world-building earn a high Novelty score. The plot, however, is serviceable but follows a fairly predictable arc — outsider joins expedition, discovers wonder, faces betrayal, saves the day — with underdeveloped character motivations. Voice acting is competent but the large ensemble means few characters get meaningful depth. Cinematography is solid for its era with bold color palettes and dynamic action staging, though not transcendent. The ending resolves too cleanly and hastily after the villain's scheme is thwarted, leaving emotional stakes undercooked and the resolution feeling rushed and formulaic despite the film's otherwise adventurous ambition.
