Point Break (1991)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

In Los Angeles, a gang of bank robbers who call themselves The Ex-Presidents commit their crimes while wearing masks of Reagan, Carter, Nixon and Johnson. Believing that the members of the gang could be surfers, the F.B.I. sends young agent Johnny Utah to the beach undercover to mix with the surfers and gather information.

The Quartile Take

Point Break is a genuinely singular action film — its fusion of surfing subculture, skydiving, bank robbery, and quasi-spiritual philosophy around the Ex-Presidents gang gives it a completely distinctive voice and tone that no other film has replicated. Kathryn Bigelow's direction brings kinetic energy and visceral action sequences, particularly the foot chase and skydiving scenes, that elevate the cinematography above average. The plot is engaging but follows a fairly predictable undercover-cop-goes-native arc. Acting is serviceable — Reeves is wooden in places while Swayze brings charisma — keeping that category solidly average. The ending, with Utah letting Bodhi paddle out to his death, is memorable and tonally fitting but not exceptional. Overall a cult classic that earns its reputation primarily through sheer originality of concept and execution.
