Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

With the 70s behind him, San Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy, returns to take New York's first 24-hour news channel by storm.

The Quartile Take

Anchorman 2 is a largely diminishing-returns sequel that recycles the absurdist comedy of the original without the same tightness or freshness. The plot is a loose, meandering collection of gags rather than a coherent story, and many set pieces feel like pale imitations of the first film's iconic moments. The cast remains committed and Will Ferrell and his ensemble still generate laughs through sheer commitment to their characters, elevating the acting slightly above the weak material. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable for a mainstream comedy sequel. Novelty is low — despite a topical angle skewering 24-hour cable news, the film largely retreads the same ground with familiar characters in a familiar register. The ending, including a bloated and overstuffed news-anchor battle royale, tries to top the original but mostly feels excessive and exhausting.
