Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen partner agree to put up a false heterosexual front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's conservative parents.
The Birdcage is elevated primarily by its performances — Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Gene Hackman are all firing on all cylinders, with Lane's Armand being a particular standout. The plot is a familiar farce structure (adapted from La Cage aux Folles), driven by escalating deception and misunderstanding, competently executed but not surprising. Cinematography is functional and stage-bound in feel, reflecting its theatrical origins without much visual ambition. Novelty gets a modest bump for its warmly humanist treatment of gay characters at a time when mainstream Hollywood rarely offered such affectionate, broadly appealing portrayals — though it is ultimately a remake working in an established comedic tradition. The ending resolves tidily in crowd-pleasing fashion without much dramatic complexity.
