The Postman (1994)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Simple Italian postman learns to love poetry while delivering mail to a famous poet; he uses this to woo local beauty Beatrice.

The Quartile Take

Il Postino is a gentle, deeply humanist gem. Massimo Troisi's performance as Mario is achingly authentic and tender, made all the more poignant by his real-life death the day after filming wrapped. The sun-drenched Procida cinematography is painterly and evocative. The plot is slight but emotionally resonant, using Neruda's poetry as a vehicle for awakening. The ending is genuinely moving and bittersweet, earning its emotional weight honestly. Novelty is solid but not exceptional — the fish-out-of-water meets poetry premise is charming rather than wholly singular.
