The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)

Quartile rating: 4/10 · 2 ratings

Mia Thermopolis is now a college graduate and on her way to Genovia to take up her duties as princess. Accompanied by her friend Lilly, Mia continues her 'princess lessons', like riding horses side-saddle and archery. But her already complicated life is turned upside down once again when she learns that she is to take the crown as queen earlier than expected, all while she meets a mysteriously charming young man.

The Quartile Take

A formulaic sequel that recycles the fish-out-of-water princess premise without adding meaningful new dimensions. The plot is predictable rom-com territory with the arranged marriage/true love conflict offering little surprise. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews share genuine charm and elevate the material beyond its script, keeping the acting serviceable and warm. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable—glossy and pleasant without any distinctive visual identity. Novelty is very low as this is essentially a by-the-numbers retread of the original's beats transplanted to a royal setting. The ending wraps up tidily in crowd-pleasing fashion consistent with the genre's expectations.
