The Quartile Take

The Next Karate Kid is a largely formulaic retread of the original franchise's beats, swapping Daniel for a female protagonist but failing to bring much fresh energy or storytelling creativity. The plot hits all the expected mentor-student milestones without surprise, and the antagonists are cartoonishly one-dimensional. Hilary Swank shows flashes of talent but the script gives her little to work with, and Pat Morita coasts comfortably on his established Miyagi persona. Cinematography is workmanlike and unremarkable. Novelty is genuinely low — this is a by-the-numbers sequel that recycles the formula without distinctive craft or voice. The ending resolves predictably with little emotional payoff. Overall a below-average franchise entry that lands near its middling reputation.
