Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Hellboy, his pyrokinetic girlfriend, Liz, and aquatic empath, Abe Sapien, face their biggest battle when an underworld elven prince plans to reclaim Earth for his magical kindred. Tired of living in the shadow of humans, Prince Nuada tries to awaken an ancient force of killing machines, the all-powerful Golden Army, to clear the way for fantasy creatures to roam free. Only Hellboy can stop the dark prince and prevent humanity's annihilation.

The Quartile Take

Guillermo del Toro's visual imagination is the film's standout strength — the creature design, the Troll Market sequence, and the lush fantasy-horror aesthetic push cinematography to a genuine 4. The plot is serviceable but thin, leaning heavily on a sympathetic-villain framework without fully developing its themes of otherness and belonging. Acting is solid across the board, with Ron Perlman charming as ever, but no one is given material to truly shine. The ending feels abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying, with the climactic confrontation resolved quickly and Hellboy's resignation from the BPRD lacking the emotional weight it needed. Novelty is above average — del Toro's singular creature-design voice and fairy-tale tone set it apart from typical superhero fare, though it doesn't fully transcend its comic-book sequel constraints.
