An armored car driver tries to elude a gang of thieves while a flood ravages the countryside.
Hard Rain is a mid-tier thriller elevated almost entirely by its remarkable practical-effects production design — filming in genuinely flooded sets with real water creates visceral, distinctive cinematography that stands out from the era. The premise is a clever high-concept hook (armored car heist during a biblical flood), but the screenplay fails to capitalize on it, delivering thin characterization and predictable plot beats. The cast (Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, Minnie Driver) performs capably given the material but is underused. The ending resolves conventionally with little surprise or emotional payoff. The flood gimmick gives it modest novelty, but the execution is largely by-the-numbers thriller formula beneath the spectacle.
