The Quartile Take

This 2024 South African survival thriller is a fairly formulaic entry in the stranded-in-the-wilderness genre. The plot — missionaries fleeing militants only to crash and face lion attacks — stacks threats without building genuine tension or character depth. Acting is passable but unremarkable, with thin characterization limiting emotional investment. The Kalahari setting offers some visual appeal and competent location photography, elevating cinematography slightly above the pack. However, the film adds little that's distinctive to either the survival thriller or the man-vs-beast subgenre, feeling derivative of better entries. The ending resolves predictably without meaningful surprise or resonance. Overall a below-average genre exercise that matches its modest reputation.
