Frank Morrison is a divorced father with a 12-year-old son, Danny. His ex-wife Susan and son Danny now live with Rick Barnes, Susan's new husband. Danny, who has a reputation for telling lies, accuses his stepfather of committing a murder. Initially, no one believes his accusations, but then Frank becomes convinced and is the only one who believes him. Now, the father Danny trusts must protect him from the stepfather he fears.
Domestic Disturbance is a formulaic thriller that hits every predictable beat of the 'dangerous stepfather' subgenre without subverting or elevating any of them. The plot is serviceable but utterly predictable, relying on stock thriller contrivances. The cast — John Travolta, Vince Vaughn, and Steve Buscemi — elevates the material somewhat above what it deserves on the page, particularly Vaughn's menacing turn as the villain and Buscemi in a brief but memorable role. Cinematography is workmanlike and unremarkable, typical of early-2000s mid-budget studio thrillers. The film offers very little in terms of novelty, recycling a well-worn premise with no distinctive voice or fresh angle. The ending resolves predictably and without tension, offering no surprises or resonance.
