Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating
Set in a world where superheroes are commonly known and accepted, young Will Stronghold, the son of the Commander and Jetstream, tries to find a balance between being a normal teenager and an extraordinary being.
Sky High is a charming, good-natured family superhero comedy that blends high school tropes with comic-book conventions in an appealing way. The plot is functional and fun but follows predictable beats — the underdog son finds his powers, navigates cliques, and saves the day. The ensemble cast (Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Bruce Campbell) elevates the material with game, self-aware performances, keeping it above average without breaking new ground. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable, with modest visual ambition for its budget and genre. Novelty gets a mild boost for its clever mashup of John Hughes-style teen comedy with superhero world-building, which felt fresh in 2005 pre-MCU saturation, though it's not radically inventive. The ending is formulaic and wraps up too neatly, hitting every expected note without surprise or resonance.
