Cockneys vs Zombies (2012)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

A group of Cockneys arm themselves to rescue their elderly relative and his retirement home friends who are trapped and fighting off a zombie attack during a zombie apocalypse in the East End of London.

The Quartile Take

Cockneys vs Zombies is a likeable but uneven British horror-comedy that leans heavily on its high concept – Cockney gangster types versus zombies, with pensioners holding their own. The premise is amusing and the cast (including Richard Briers' memorable slow-motion walker chase) deliver some genuine charm and decent comedic timing. However, the plot is formulaic and predictable, following the zombie-siege blueprint with little deviation, and the cinematography is functional at best – cheap and workmanlike. The ending resolves things without much surprise or emotional payoff. Its novelty comes mainly from the Cockney flavour and pensioner angle rather than any reinvention of the genre. A fun but disposable entry in the post-Shaun of the Dead British zom-com space.
