Sly (2023)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

His love of film began as an escape from a rocky childhood. From underdog to Hollywood legend, Sylvester Stallone tells his story in this documentary.

The Quartile Take

Sly is a candid and engaging portrait of Stallone that benefits enormously from his surprisingly open and reflective participation. The narrative arc from troubled childhood to Rocky's creation to blockbuster stardom is well-structured and emotionally resonant. However, the documentary follows a fairly conventional biographical format—chronological talking-head interviews, archival clips, familiar celebrity testimonials—that doesn't distinguish it cinematographically or structurally from many other star-profile docs. Stallone's candor gives it genuine warmth and some surprising vulnerability, but the ending feels more like a graceful fade than a memorable conclusion, and the overall novelty is limited by the by-the-numbers doc template.
