Polanski's deeply unsettling psychological horror chamber piece is among the most singular entries in the paranoid thriller genre. The slow, suffocating descent into identity dissolution is meticulously constructed, with Polanski himself delivering a quietly anguished central performance surrounded by a superb ensemble of grotesque neighbors. The Parisian apartment building becomes a genuinely nightmarish space through Sven Nykvist's claustrophobic cinematography, all narrow corridors and accusatory sight-lines. The film's conception — a man gradually convinced he is being coerced into becoming his predecessor — is wholly distinctive and executed with unsettling commitment. The ending, while thematically consistent and genuinely disturbing in its circular logic, lands with somewhat diminished impact compared to the relentless dread that precedes it, feeling slightly overwrought rather than devastating.
