The Quartile Take

Grumpy Old Men is a pleasant but formulaic comedy that leans heavily on its two leads. The plot is thin and predictable — rival neighbors competing for a woman's affection is well-worn territory with few surprises. Lemmon and Matthau elevate the material considerably through their natural chemistry and comic timing, making the acting the clear highlight. Cinematography is functional Midwestern winter scenery, serviceable but unremarkable. Novelty is low; the film follows a very conventional romantic comedy-rivalry structure with little that distinguishes it beyond its cast. The ending resolves tidily in expected fashion but delivers some warmth and a few laughs thanks to the performers.
