New York fashion designer, Melanie Carmichael suddenly finds herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor. But her past holds many secrets—including Jake, the redneck husband she married in high school, who refuses to divorce her. Bound and determined to end their contentious relationship once and for all, Melanie sneaks back home to Alabama to confront her past.
Sweet Home Alabama is a pleasant but formulaic romantic comedy that hits every expected beat of the 'city woman returns to her roots' genre. The plot is predictable from the first act, with the outcome never in serious doubt. Reese Witherspoon elevates the material with her natural charm, and the supporting cast including Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey are likable if underdeveloped. Visually it's competent but unremarkable TV-movie-adjacent cinematography. The fish-out-of-water premise and class contrast between Alabama and New York City offer mild entertainment but little originality — the concept is well-worn. The ending delivers the expected emotional payoff for fans of the genre, executed warmly if without surprise.
