The Contestant (2023)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The incredible true story of a man who lived for 15 months trapped inside a small room, naked, starving and alone... and completely unaware that his life was being broadcast on national TV in Japan, to over 15 million viewers a week.

The Quartile Take

The Contestant tells one of the most jaw-dropping true stories in television history — Tomoaki Hamatsu (Nasubi) living naked and isolated for 15 months unknowingly broadcast to millions. The subject matter is inherently extraordinary and the ethical dimensions are genuinely disturbing, earning top marks for Plot and Novelty. As a documentary, traditional acting is not applicable so it scores low by default. The cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable, relying heavily on archival footage from the original show. The ending is affecting and provides emotional closure, though it doesn't fully resolve the moral complexity it raises.
