Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A misfit group of World War II American soldiers goes AWOL to rob a bank behind German lines.

The Quartile Take

Kelly's Heroes earns its distinctiveness through its irreverent, anachronistic anti-war comedy blended with a heist film structure — a genuinely singular combination that feels unlike any other WWII film. The plot is fun and breezy but somewhat episodic and thin. The ensemble cast (Eastwood, Sutherland, Rickles, Savalas) is charming and likable without being truly outstanding. Cinematography is competent and occasionally impressive in its tank sequences but unremarkable overall. The ending, with its Mexican standoff turned groovy negotiation, is memorable but slightly deflating in its abruptness.
