A brain surgeon marries a femme fatale, causing his life to turn upside down. Things go more awry when he falls in love with a talking brain.

The Quartile Take

Steve Martin's absurdist comedy is a genuine one-of-a-kind creation — a screwball parody of sci-fi and medical melodrama with a hilariously singular premise (a brain surgeon falling in love with a disembodied talking brain). Martin and Kathleen Turner are both excellent, with Turner relishing her over-the-top femme fatale role. The plot is gleefully ridiculous and holds together well enough as a comedic vehicle. Cinematography is functional at best, serving the comedy without distinction. The ending is satisfying if not spectacular. Novelty is the film's strongest suit — it has an unmistakable comic voice that feels wholly its own.
