The Quartile Take

New Police Story is a solid Jackie Chan vehicle that trades in much of his trademark comedy for a darker, more emotionally grounded tone — a genuine tonal shift for the franchise. The plot of a disgraced, alcoholic cop finding redemption is functional but familiar, and the gang of thrill-seeking punks as antagonists is a serviceable if somewhat shallow conceit. Chan delivers a more dramatic performance than usual, showing genuine vulnerability, though the supporting cast is uneven. The cinematography is competent Hong Kong action fare with well-staged set pieces but nothing visually distinctive. The film earns credit for attempting a more serious register within Chan's career, but the narrative beats and villain archetypes are largely by-the-numbers. The ending provides adequate emotional closure without being particularly memorable or surprising.
