In this prequel to the original, a bloody power struggle among the Triads coincides with the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, setting up the events of the first film.
Infernal Affairs II is a solid prequel that expands the universe of the original with strong Hong Kong cinematography and production design, capturing the tension of the 1997 handover era beautifully. The plot is competent but suffers from the inherent limitations of a prequel — we already know how key characters end up, reducing dramatic tension. The acting is capable across the board without reaching the heights of Tony Leung and Andy Lau in the original. Cinematographically it maintains the sleek, atmospheric look that defined the trilogy. Novelty is middling; it's a prequel that adds context but doesn't substantially reinvent the formula of the first film.
