Who's Harry Crumb? (1989)

Harry Crumb is a bumbling and inept private investigator who is hired to solve the kidnapping of a young heiress which he's not expected to solve because his employer is the mastermind behind the kidnapping.

The Quartile Take

Who's Harry Crumb? is a fairly generic late-80s comedy vehicle built around John Candy's considerable charm. The plot is a well-worn bumbling-detective setup with no real surprises, and the kidnapping mystery is thin and predictable. Candy delivers energetic physical comedy and his natural likability elevates the material, but the supporting cast is largely forgettable. Cinematography is workmanlike TV-movie quality with nothing distinctive. The film doesn't bring much new to the bumbling-detective genre — it sits comfortably alongside similar comedies of the era without distinguishing itself. The ending resolves tidily but without any memorable payoff. It's a pleasant if unremarkable Candy showcase.
