When an unmanned space shuttle crashes on an uncharted planet, a trio of astronaut chimpanzees are launched by NASA into a wormhole to investigate.
Space Chimps is a formulaic, by-the-numbers animated comedy that offers little originality or distinction. The plot rehashes familiar underdog-in-space tropes without meaningful depth or surprise. Voice acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with no standout performances. The animation and cinematography are below the standard of contemporary animated features, lacking the visual polish or creativity of Pixar or DreamWorks productions of the era. The concept of chimps in space had some inherent novelty potential but is squandered on generic execution. The ending wraps up predictably with no emotional payoff. Across the board, this is a mediocre animated film that sits comfortably below average in most respects.
