Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

The Police Academy misfits travel to Miami Beach for Commandant Lassard to be honored with a prestigious lifetime award pending his retirement. Things take a turn when Lassard unknowingly ends up in possession of stolen diamonds from a jewel heist.

The Quartile Take

The fifth entry in the Police Academy franchise is a textbook case of franchise fatigue. The jewel heist MacGuffin dropped into the laps of the recurring misfit ensemble is entirely formulaic, offering nothing the previous films hadn't already done. The Miami Beach setting provides some visual variety but the cinematography is flat and workmanlike. The cast goes through familiar motions with diminishing returns — even Bubba Smith and the reliable comedic players feel tired. The ending resolves predictably with zero surprise. Novelty is the real casualty: this is a by-the-numbers fifth installment recycling the same gags, character dynamics, and structure, making it one of the least distinctive entries in an already repetitive series.
