The embodiment of ultimate evil, a glowing orb terrorizes a young girl with bizarre stories of dark fantasy, eroticism and horror.
Heavy Metal is a landmark in adult animation — an anthology of dark fantasy, erotica, and sci-fi vignettes tied together loosely by the Loc-Nar orb, with a legendary rock soundtrack. Its novelty is undeniable: the film carved out its own irreverent, transgressive niche that few have matched. Cinematographically the rotoscoping and varied art styles across segments show real ambition. However the anthology format means plot coherence is thin and some segments are far stronger than others, while the voice acting is perfunctory at best. The framing device ending feels anticlimactic and rushed, failing to deliver a satisfying payoff to the whole.
